Why your AC is running but not cooling

Common causes of “no cool” issues and safe steps you can take before scheduling service.

Start with the basics

Check thermostat mode (Cool) and setpoint.

Replace a visibly dirty filter if you have one.

Ensure supply and return vents are open and not blocked.

  • Thermostat on Cool, fan on Auto (usually).
  • Filter not collapsed or clogged.
  • Outdoor unit has clear airflow (no debris).

If the coil is frozen

A frozen indoor coil often signals airflow restriction or system issues.

Turn cooling off to prevent further icing; do not chip ice.

  • Cooling off, fan on (if recommended) to thaw.
  • Schedule service to prevent repeat freezing.

Why professional diagnostics matter

Electrical components and refrigeration-side issues should be handled by licensed professionals for safety and compliance.

FAQs

Can I keep running the AC if it’s not cooling?

Running a system that isn’t cooling can worsen icing or damage components. If you see ice, turn cooling off and request service.

Is low refrigerant always the cause?

Not always. Airflow problems, controls, or electrical faults can also cause “no cool” symptoms.
